Distribution
Throughout the Philippines.
Uses
The timber is used as red meranti. It is reported that wood extractives are tumour-inhibiting. The bark contains 9—10% tannin, and may be used for tanning sole leather.
Observations
A large tree up to 50 m tall, with bole branchless for 20—30 m and a diameter up to 200 cm, buttresses prominent; leaves ovate to elliptical, thinly leathery, 6.5—17 cm 3—7.5 cm, with (8—)11—15 pairs of secondary veins; stamens about 48, anthers linear-oblong with short appendages, stylopodium indistinct; larger fruit calyx lobes up to 7 cm 1.3 cm. Shorea negrosensis is common and occurs often gregarious in evergreen and seasonal dipterocarp forest at low altitudes. The density of the wood is 420—805 kg/m3 at 15% moisture content.
