Vernacular Names
— Mangifera pajang: Brunei: bambangan (Malay). Indonesia: asem payang (Kutai, East Kalimantan), alim (Kenya Dayak, East Kalimantan), hambawang (Malay, West Kalimantan). Malaysia: bambangan, embawang (Malay, Sabah), embang (Sarawak).
Origin and Geographic Distribution
Endemic to Borneo, Mangifera pajang also occurs wild in lowland dipterocarp forest and in forest on well drained alluvium. It is found in cultivation in Dayak orchards in Sabah, Sarawak, Brunei and East Kalimantan, where it is common along the Middle Mahakam, less common in West Kalimantan. This attractive fruit tree has remained confined to its native area and was introduced in fruit tree collections outside Borneo only in the 1980s.
Uses
Fresh bachang fruit contain an irritant juice which may inflame the lips and mouth. At maturity the irritant juice is restricted to the skin, so that the ripe fruit can be eaten fresh if it is peeled fairly thick. It is a rather savoury fruit, in spite of its turpentine smell and the taste sometimes is likened to durian, but it is not generally valued as a table fruit.
Unripe fruit, washed in salted water and sliced is used in vegetable salads ('rujak') and in a sour pickle ('asinan'). In Borneo, especially in East Kalimantan, the fruit commonly replaces tamarind as an acid ingredient in the preparation of sambal. In Malaysia it is used to make chutneys as well as pickles.
The leaves are said to be antipyretic and the seeds used against trichophytosis, scabies and eczema. Orang Asli in Peninsular Malaysia reportedly used the sap to deepen tattoo scars. The wood is not durable, but is suitable for light indoor constructions.
The fruits of Mangifera pajang, globose or ovoid, up to 20 cm in diameter, are the largest known in the genus. Though the thick flesh is coarsely fibrous, the ripe fruit is pleasant to eat, having a specific aromatic flavour. The strong smell is similar to that of bachang fruit but less offensive. After making longitudinal cuts with a knife through the 1 cm thick skin, the fruit is peeled like a banana. The bright deep yellow flesh forms an attractive contrast with the rough, potato brown skin. During the season they are commonly sold on Dayak markets. The skin is occasionally dried and used for sambal. In Sarawak flushing shoots are sold as a vegetable. In flower Mangifera foetida as well as Mangifera pajang are beautiful ornamentals with upright inflorescences.
Properties
The edible portion of Mangifera foetida represents 65% of fruit weight. Per 100 g edible portion the flesh contains: water 72.5 g, protein 1.4 g, carbohydrates 25.4 g, calcium 21 mg, phosphorus 15 mg, thiamine 0.03 mg, ß-carotene equivalent 0.218 mg and vitamin C 56 mg.
Botany
— Mangifera pajang: Tree, 15—33 m tall, sometimes deciduous, trunk 30—70 cm diameter, bark brown or grey, smooth or fissured. Leaves elliptic-oblong to obovate-oblong (17—)28—45 cm x (7—)10—15 cm, rigidly coriaceous, nerves prominent, petiole (2—)5—7 cm long. Inflorescences panicles, terminal or subterminal, erect, pyramidal, up to 30 cm long, densely flowered, glabrous, fragrant; calyx 5-lobed; petals 5, purple on inner surface, pinkish-white outside; stamens 5, 1 or 2 fertile; ovary white. Fruit a globose or ovoid drupe, 9.5—12(—20) cm x 6.5—10(—17) cm, rough, potato-brown, flesh bright deep yellow, sweet-acid, pleasantly aromatic, fibrous. Stone plump, ca. 9 cm x 6.5 cm x 4.5 cm, endocarp woody, up to 5 mm thick, seed monoembryonic. In Sabah trees flower in April—May and fruit between July and September; in East Kalimantan the fruiting season is December—March.
Mangifera pajang resembles Mangifera foetida in bloom; it is different notably by its longer leaves with prominent nerves and by its large brown fruits.
In orchards where Mangifera pajang and Mangifera foetida are grown together, naturally occurring cross-pollination has given rise to hybrid forms whose leaves and fruits have characteristics of the two species.
Ecology
The species occur chiefly in primary lowland forest in the wet tropics. They are adapted to areas with abundant rainfall, evenly distributed over the year, and are grown up to elevations above 1000 m.
Agronomy
Propagation is by seed. The seedlings require much moisture and light shade. They tolerate much shade but later on grow also well in full light. Mangifera foetida proved to be a suitable rootstock for cvs of Mangifera indica in a moist climate, but others doubt this because of swellings at the union. Budding is performed after the modified Forkert method with buds of non-petioled wood on one-year-old rootstocks, during the dry season. Spacing for orchard planting should be 14—16 m.
Trunk borers (Rhytidodera simulans, a longicorn beetle) may damage and kill branches, but the tree retains its viability. The attacks of the bark by Arbela are more superficial. The fruit is often damaged by the mango weevil, Cryptorrhynchus mangiferae, whose larvae feed in the flesh.
The fruits are harvested during the rainy season, in West Java from October to December.
Prospects
Bachang has its traditional usage in South-East Asia and its role is not likely to change much in the near future. Mangifera pajang, however, is a new discovery; its large, aromatic rather than odorous fruits may have a strong appeal elsewhere in South-East Asia. All horticultural aspects of this crop need further investigation.
